Two Schools, One Happy Community

One of the questions families sometimes ask is why Sun Hill Infant and Sun Hill Junior School are two separate schools, each with its own headteacher and staff team.

For those used to a single primary school running from Reception to Year 6, it can seem a little unusual at first. In practice, it gives children something rather special: two schools that can focus closely on the particular ages and stages they know best, while working together to support children as they grow.

At Sun Hill Infant and Preschool, our children are at the very beginning of their school journey. These early years are full of enormous change. Children learn to read, write, count, make friends, solve problems, manage their feelings and become more independent. Our staff understand how young children learn and how important it is for school to feel safe, joyful and full of encouragement.

Sun Hill Junior School then builds on these foundations. As children move into Key Stage 2, they are ready for greater independence, new responsibilities and different challenges. The Junior School team can shape its teaching, environment and opportunities around the needs of children in Years 3 to 6.

Having separate leadership means that each school can give its full attention to the children it serves. It also means that both schools can retain their own character and strengths.

However, separate does not mean disconnected. We are close neighbours and share a genuine commitment to the children and families in our community. Many of our pupils continue to Sun Hill Junior School, so it is important to us that the move feels positive, familiar and exciting.

Throughout the year, children have opportunities to take part in shared activities and events like Sports Day. These occasions allow younger children to meet older pupils, see their siblings, enjoy being part of the wider Sun Hill families and begin to feel comfortable with what comes next.

As children approach the end of Year 2, transition becomes more focused. Staff share helpful information, children have opportunities to become familiar with the Junior School, and families are supported as they prepare for the move into Year 3.

Of course, changing schools is still a significant moment. There will be new teachers, new routines and new expectations. We do not pretend that nothing changes. Instead, we work together to make sure children feel prepared, reassured and ready for their next adventure.

Our relationship is also about more than transition. The two schools share the same local community and many of the same families. Brothers and sisters may attend both schools at the same time, and parents often know staff and children across the two sites. We want families to feel that both schools listen, communicate and have the same ambition for local children.

I believe the separate Infant and Junior School structure gives families the best of both worlds. Children benefit from two specialist schools, each designed around a particular stage of childhood, while enjoying a close and supportive relationship between them.

Our role is to give every child the strongest and happiest possible start. We want them to leave us as confident learners, kind friends and curious young people who are excited about what lies ahead.

We are proud of the foundations our children build here, and we are proud to work alongside Sun Hill Junior School as they take their next steps.
