Our Governance

Governors help to set the school’s vision and priorities, monitor educational standards, oversee the school’s finances and ensure that the school fulfils its statutory responsibilities. Governors provide both support and constructive challenge, while the Headteacher and senior leadership team remain responsible for the day-to-day running of the school.

Our governors bring a range of professional skills, experiences and perspectives to their roles. They include parent, staff, local authority and co-opted governors who work together in the best interests of all children at Sun Hill.

Governors serve a four year term of office and may be re-appointed at the end of their term.

We meet once every half term for around two hours. Each session tends to follow a theme, such as reviewing our safeguarding processes or our budget for the year, along with any other business that we need to attend to as the school year progresses. If a governor is not able to attend a meeting in-person, we may meet in a ‘hybrid’ approach that lets them join remotely.

Our work includes reviewing the policies and processes that the school has in place, ensuring that the Head and the leadership team are working effectively and have the support they need in place to run the school well, and setting the strategic direction for the school.

We’ve found we work best as a group with most governors taking an interest in every aspect of the school’s governance, but we do have two subcommittees to manage particular aspects of the board’s work; a group that reviews the Headteacher’s performance (Headteacher Appraisal Panel) and a group that determines salary progression for eligible teaching staff, following recommendation by the Headteacher. (Governors’ Pay Committee). This Pay Committee also determines salary progression for the Headteacher, where eligible, following recommendation by the Headteacher Appraisal Panel. Membership of these groups is denoted with an asterisk.

Other working groups, for example, to support recruitment, may be formed as and when required, but otherwise we all sit across all matters arising.

Governors may take the lead on on specific roles, such as supporting the recruitment and training of the board, oversight of Safeguarding and SEND, or Early Years provision. Where a governor has a defined link role, this is marked on their profile below.

Our board has several types of governor:

  • Parent Governors – Parents are invited to stand for election as parent governors, and so aid in the running of the school their child attends.

  • Co-opted Governors – Individuals from the local area with an interest in the good management of the school may be ‘co-opted’ to the governing board; they are selected by the governors to provide skills, interest or other support to the body as needed.Local Education

  • Authority Representatives – The LEA appoints a representative to the governing body of all maintained schools.

  • Staff Governors – A member of staff in the school sits on the board to represent the staff body.Associate Members – We do not currently have any associate board members.

  • The Clerk – The clerk holds the agenda for the board, minutes the meetings and is the point of contact for the governing body, should you need to contact them. Our Clerk is Mrs A Davies, the school’s Senior Administrative Officer.
